3:00 Sunday, 20 May + Jenny Magnus/Room

Room is a song performance. A performance is a way of exploring space, inhabiting space. The performer is in the space with the audience; and in that moment, something happens between them, something hopefully good and true. A song is a way of exploring space as well, sonic space, an imagined world. Room is an effort to spelunk, down into the space of a moment, into possible spaces, together. 50 minutes!

Room is a part of Curious Theatre Branch’s 2007 season: www.curioustheatrebranch.com

10:30 AM Saturday, 19 May + Morning Yoga Workout
Instructor: Mercedes Gomez

Mercedes Gomez was initially drawn to Yoga as a means to help her massage clients relieve pain at home, by practicing postures which promoted a restorative flow of energy through the entire body. As she began to appreciate the perfect anatomical sense encompassed by this ancient science, she dove deeper into her own practice, and began attending workshops and classes conducted by master teachers such as Tias Little, Eric Paskel, Ana Forrest, Sean Corn, and Andrey Lappa. Mercedes has embraced Yoga as a powerful tool for healing the body, training the mind, and fostering a spiritual clarity that can help anyone on their road to personal growth. After several years of private study, Mercedes completed the Teacher Training Certification program from Moksha Yoga Center under the watchful tutelage of master teacher Darren Friesen.
A one and a half hour workshop. Limited to 15 participants. Price: 1 Shot of Estrogen

12:00 PM Saturday, 19 May + The Art of Saying Before Words
Based on the method of Jaque Lecoq
Instructor: Masha Kore of Eleffant Foot

We will look at the expressive body as the instrument for stage and life many performances. In order to be understood, we have to communicate clearly, and for that we need to be aware of our message system. Before saying anything we speak with spatial and kinetic ‘language’. Participants of this workshop will have a chance to unlock or exercise the awareness of their body’s communication techniques. Know what you are saying when you are silent, and make it loud, if you wish!
After a basic warm up, the participants will plunge directly into an exploration of the body’s spatial relationships, looking at what we communicate with distances and positions of the body in the space. Then we will look at the message system of the breath and the complexity of dramatic posture. We will keep the imagination flowing with the poetry of elements present in the body and the ways we contact nature through the body. All levels are welcome.
A one and a half hour workshop. Limited to 15 participants. Price: 1 Shot of Estrogen

Marketing vs Making: Slow art in a fast paced world

Is time our enemy or are the arts one of the few places left for slow reflection?  Ann Filmer of Estrogen Fest moderates this panel debating the challenges and pitfalls of branding one's art.  How do we negotiate the terrain of, "the audience must know exactly what they're getting into" with the exploratory nature and slow discoveries within art and artists.   When is this negotiation successful and when does it get out-of-balance?

+ Venus Zarris, theatre critic Gay Chicago Magazine
+ Kristen Cox, Chicago Dancemakers Forum
+ Erin West, Director of Arts Marketing at POP, former Director of Marketing for Steppenwolf Theatre

What is AfterWords? Estrogen Fest has always been a showcase for short works, so this year we wanted to give these pieces greater context. We want to give the audience more insight into each artist’s work and their process. Thus AfterWords was created. After each evening of works, engage with us in focused conversations between artists across various disciplines. Moderated by Artistic Directors Ann Filmer and Joanie Schultz.
